This is a mild mango peri-peri sauce for anyone who doesn't regularly use hot sauce packaged in a glass bottle.

In the early 1900s, Captain Jan Brandt travelled to Lourenço Marques to load his gold onto a ship.

While at the harbour, he met Vasco da Gama, and the two quickly became the best of friends. As a parting gift, Vasco presented Jan with a bottle of his famous Peri-Peri sauce.

Jan thoroughly enjoyed the little bottle of fiery goodness and soon set his mind on creating a sauce of his own.

On his journey home, he stopped at the Louw family's farm near Hectorspruit, where Annie's family gifted him the most magnificent, sun-ripened mangoes.

Back at his home in Kaapsehoop, inspiration struck. He blended the sweetness of those delicious mangoes with the fiery heat of his new sauce and—voilà!—Captain Brandt's unique Mango Peri-Peri Sauce was born.

From then on, the Captain and his friends enjoyed it the best way they knew how: generously spooned over thick-cut steaks around a crackling South African braai.
